Auburn Days

September 22, 2010

I really hate to bother you

I know that you would want me to

If you knew I was lost

—————————————–

Don’t come this way to often now

Days in a haze are bleeding out

And gone to the shores

—————————————-

The age has laid upon your face

Your movements slow, a careful pace

Guides your feet along

Your mind is all that’s so strong

——————————————————–

And you’re worried now that I’m over-drawn

With breathless words to hang upon

And you’re gone

————————-

Time will find us all

Leave me while I’m strong

Golden days to bronze

To auburn, then they’re gone

————————————-

Simple words, so indescript

Hard to place between your lips

And move them along

——————————-

Subtle shifts in finger tips

Hold the pen in your weakened grip

And guide the line along

Your mind is still so strong

——————————————————–

And you’re worried now that I’m over-drawn

With breathless words to hang upon

And you’re gone

————————

Time will find us all

Leave me while I’m strong

Golden days to bronze

To auburn, then they’re gone

————————————

You’re counting down

Have you made your peace?

Have you brought to light

What was underneath?

And I’m not ready now

To let you go

And I’m so frightened

To be left alone

So don’t go

——————————–

The sky is finally softening

The night fails so reluctantly

But soon whispers away

————————————

We are warm within our beds

Sky alight in gold and red

And gently to blue

————————————-

Place your feet upon the floor

As you did the day before

And let your life unfold

To continue is to be bold

Hear The Heathen

September 22, 2010

I know the path is all descending

Half moon and a hundred silent stars

I feel the dirt between the boot treads

I hear crying in the dark

———————————————-

Hear the heathen offering up a prayer

Of forgiveness for what he took away

Held the head down of one who truly loved him

Body bending, burdened by the shame

————————————————

Downtown the night is never ending

Street lamps as piercing as the sun

Half glass always looks so empty

I know I’ll buy another one

———————————————–

Hear the heathen offering up a prayer

Of forgiveness for what he took away

Held the head down of one who truly loved him

Body bending, burdened by the shame

—————————————————-

She sleeps and walks among the hallowed

Stained sheets, infirmary beds

I reach and try to gently wake her

She weeps for the silent and the dead

———————————————-

Hear the heathen offering up a prayer

Of forgiveness for what he took away

Held the head down of one who truly loved him

Body bending, burdened by the shame

Little Bird and Little Fly

September 22, 2010

Little Bird and Little Fly

Spend the days buzzing by

Ride a gust, catch a breeze

From a cloud or from a sneeze

Shuck and jive, bob and weave

Find a picnic by the sea

Swoop on in, bring a friend

Something sweet is happening

————————————-

Today is alright

With all of us in sight

So good to have you here again

And all of us burn bright

Not alone tonight

So come on, the party’s about to start

———————————————-

Fish and Frog, in the pond

Playing chase all day long

Diving deep, pushing stones

Messing up the turtle’s home

He don’t mind, he don’t care

He can sleep most anywhere

On a log, or in the reeds

Painted shell just glistening

———————————-

Today is alright

With all of us in sight

So good to have you here again

And all of us burn bright

Not alone tonight

So come on, the party’s about to start

————————————————————-

Someone is singing about the food they’re bringing

The band is all here and tuning up

Rabbits in the thickets

Deer, daisies and crickets

Bears and badgers and

——————————

Little Bird and Little Fly

Visit guests low and high

In the stream, up in the trees

By the lane and in between

Best of friends, best of hosts

Little Bird makes a little toast

To everyone, Moon and Sun

Gives a tune for all to hum

Forgiven From Today

September 22, 2010

Driving home to Boston, cat sleeps upon my lap

Denver on the AM, wheels seem to know the way

Push a little harder, moon waxes clear and bright

The beauty and the emptiness meet the navy of the night

———————————————————————-

Feel the road heave and sigh

Singing, proud to be alive

Calls the driver on to drive

The beating of the heart

Pulsing out in time

——————————————————

Ladies of the mist, pirouette within the dark

Frozen frames of beauty caught amongst the pines

Ghosts upon the road minuet between the lines

Greeting every saddened smile and every friend of mine

———————————————————————

Feel the road heave and sigh

Singing, proud to be alive

Calls the driver on to drive

The beating of the heart

Pulsing out in time

———————————–

Engine burns and fills the air

Stricken dumb, the sound retreats and gives way

Do I wake or do I sleep?

Cast to spell by the army of the memory

———————————————————-

Riding now in silence, the east reveals the dawn

A golden band awakens southside of the sky

Willingly, I lift my foot and feel the speeding car glide on

Drawn into the growing light

While all the cavalry sings along

—————————————

And they tell me it’s ok

I am forgiven from today on

————————————

Big Ol’ Bull

September 22, 2010

It was a wild ride, but I bucked you off

I kicked to save my life

You led me to water, but you couldn’t make me drink

And I’ll probably die of thirst

—————————————

And we won’t know if we made the right decision till it’s made

You never know if you’re gonna win till all the cards been laid

—————————————————————————-

And I’m just a big ol’ bull who takes one rider at a time

Best hold on as long as you can
